New Year ~ New Goals ~ New You

I hope your holidays were filled with love, laughter, and spending quality time with family and friends. I know we had a roller coaster of emotions over the months, from dealing with Covid, complications from Covid, a family member fighting breast cancer, to spending cherished time with our family, making wonderful memories, and the birth of our third grandbaby.😊 Hopefully, ending this past year on such a great note, sets the tone for 2022.

And here we are, New Year, New You, and all those changes we hope to make over the next twelve months. Striving to make ourselves the best we can be for ourselves and our families, seems to be an yearly pledge for me.πŸ˜“

This year though, I chose not to place restrictions on myself. Instead, I plan to make a better version of myself each day. Every morning is a new beginning, and if I fail to achieve one of my goals/chore for the day, I can always start new the next. Some may think this is setting myself up for failure, but for me this is what gives flexibility. After all, that day of the week does comes about when you don't want a salad for lunch or a protein shake for breakfast, instead you indulge in an egg sandwich or maybe french fries and a burger (those days do happen, at least in my world).

And it's not all about food. For some, like me, I have a wide range of things in my life I would love to improve on this year. Exercise being another one. Though I strive to get on the treadmill everyday, some days it just doesn't happen. Instead of being down on myself for it, (okay maybe a little-but I'm working on not beating myself up over it😞) focus on eating a little healthier that day and plan on getting back on the treadmill the following morning.

What seems to be working for me, is setting goals for the day, week, month, year, and what I don't get done for a particular day, put it at the top of the list for the next. While I won't bore you with all the particulars here is a small example of my day; I wake up, hit the treadmill, grab my protein shake, spend some time going over what I want to accomplish for the day-chores, errands or appointments, what I'm preparing for supper, evening chores, and carve in a little relaxation time in the evening with hubby- then I set out to fulfill my day. (Some days we put too much pressure on ourselves and need a little forgiveness. Don't pile on so much on that you forget to enjoy your day and time with those around you. I'm guilty of this too- but hey, I'm a work in progress.πŸ˜…)

So here's to giving ourselves forgiveness, time to relax, breathe, and take time out of each day for what matters most to us as individuals.

Strive to be a better you, for you!

 HARVEST 2021

My husband and I have had a garden ever since we bought our first house many moons ago. Over the years it changed and evolved as did everything around us. After all, if you aren't changing and growing you're standing still (and we know in this world that doesn't work). So here we are eons later in the home of our dreams, planting, harvesting, and replanting. Even this season, the garden started in one area and was moved to another -Neither was where it started when first bought the house. 😡  I'm hoping the new area is the final designation - as do the plants.😏

With moving the garden mid season, I didn't expect the plants to do as well as they had in the past with new soil and maybe not as much prep work, etc.

However, this year's harvest was outstanding. Here is a picture of our butternut squash. If anyone have some good recipes for butternut squash, please feel free to share. I need as many as I can get lol.

We also grew white squash (or as some call Patty Pan squash). I forgot to take pictures of them 😞
We also put in some apple and peach trees about two or three years ago and they did not disappoint this time around either. Peach wine or apple wine anyone? Yes, please. My husband makes excellent Peach Wine. πŸ˜‹ (We did eat some of them too) Next year, I hope to get to them earlier -- before they become over ripe-- and can or freeze the peaches. I think I'm going to make applesauce from the apples instead of wine tough. The last time I made it (a few years ago) the applesauce turned out so delicious.

This was our first successful year on growing pumpkins-- planted in a different section of our land, and they also did outstanding. I may have planted them a little early, but hey, always learning something new right. Crossing our fingers they last until Halloween.πŸ‘»
A few were grown for pumpkin puree, this will be a new one for me. I'll let you know how that turns out.πŸ˜‹ Any advice appreciated. LOL

The tomatoes we grew this year, while they did not get as big as past years, we were able to can 22 quarts of sauce and 9 quarts of tomato soup. Yum - I had to play around with this tomato soup recipe over the years before I made the winner. (One year I added beef stock- 😬 we did not like the flavor.)

Lastly, salsa anyone! I also tweaked this recipe over the years before setting on this winner. The tomatoes, green peppers, sweet banana peppers, and onions were all from our own garden. Unfortunately, I did not get pictures of these as we picked and stored until we accumulated enough to can. The pepper plants are still producing -hopefully I can freeze some for the winter as well.

16 jars of delectable salsa.

I realize gardening isn't for everyone - at one time my husband did most of the work as I really had no desire to take on the extra task. I'm glad he stuck to it and over time convinced me of the benefits. Now, I even grow my own plants from seeds - A feat I refused to tackle in the past. I get a new founded satisfaction and happiness when those first little sprouts break through the soil.

I think more and more people have started gardening over this past year (maybe due to being homebound), and I have heard of so many different styles/ ways people have incorporated plants into their lifestyles. So whether you have a plot of land or an apartment and are interested in growing your own food, search the internet. There are a lot of very creative ideas out on the web.

In the meantime, if you have any gardening tips, tricks, or unusual gardening stories, please feel free to share in the comment section. I wish you all much success.

SCENIC SOLITUDE

Wow... I can't believe it's been so long, or that I've let life and a full time day job veer me off my path - well mostly the full time job. But thankfully, I have been given the chance to reconnect with my writing and this blog- which I plan to take to new heights. I'm hoping to include updates on my writing, trips/vacations, recipes I have tried - and not burned lol, crafts I attempted, and gardening information.

You know, when I first pulled up my page and realized I have not posted in years, I contemplated deleting the original and creating a new blog. But this is a part of my history - a part of me and my journey- and after all the hard work - definitely deserves to keep its stamp on my life. So please, excuse the missing years and join me in this new chapter of my Life.

To begin this old/ new time, I decided to start with the first real vacation I took with my husband of 28 years. πŸ‘€πŸ‘€. Yes, you read correctly. After 28 years of marriage, we embarked on our very first real vacation together -along with my sister and brother-in-law.

The cabin above is where we stayed in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and below I included pictures from our trip. So please sit back, enjoy the photos, and be transported to Scenic Solitude.

The cabin where we stayed had the most stunning views. You could see down in the valley, and at night a couple of horses would come into the field. We never did see a bear, which was fine by me, but there were reports of sightings from other people on the mountain. I did enjoy going to town during the day, but after seeing all we could, retreating to our cabin for an adult beverage while cooking out on the grill was also high up there on the list.

The cabin was clean and the owners were magnificent. They even took the time to message me to be sure all was going well and to wish my husband a Happy 50th Birthday. (We originally planned this vacation a year and a half ago, but due to Covid we had to postpone for this year- and the owners remembered !)

If you look real close, there is a house/structure at the top of this mountain, visible from the balcony of our cabin.
We visited many placed while in Tennessee, Ole Red Restaurant, Distillery's, Winery's, and shops.

This was taken at Smoky Mountain Knife Works, in Sevierville, Tennessee. A lot more than just knives to see in this large store.

Here is where I grew worried. You see my husband has always wanted to be Santa, and not the Santa you see at the stores, he wants to be The Santa - the one who lives at the North Pole, has the reindeer, the elves, the whole thing. Now I know we were not at the North Pole, but this place truly transports you into a Santa village frame of mind. Below you will see there was room after room of truly beautiful Christmas decorations. This place moves you to that "believing" state of mind.  I truly thought I would be coming home alone - as it took a long time to get my husband out of this magical place.

You do not want to miss the Sweet shop. We could have eaten these delectable snacks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Be sure to pack a toothbrush - and use it.

Click on this picture to visit the Christmas Place Shop.

I would like to include a link to one more of the great shops we visited on our trip - however I did not get any pictures of this place, the skin care and smell goods are amazing.

If you are thinking of traveling down toward Pigeon Forge and want more information on the cabin, click picture at the top of this page to see if this scenic place may be right for you, I know it was for us.

Thank you for viewing my blog and I hope you stop by often.

LOST MEMORIES -
When your past is a blank, it’s hard to trust the future…

“Nick Matthews? What drags you out this way?” Gus, owner of the Lonesome Steer Honky Tonk, fingered his handlebar moustache. “I heard you’ve been out of town more than in since your parents took up traveling. How they doin’?” He tugged on the ends of his black leather vest.
     “Good.”
A crash of balls along with a cowboy’s hoot sounded from the pool tables tucked in the back corner.
The barkeep glanced at all of them. “Aren’t you missing one? Where’s Sam?”
Chris spoke up. “He stayed behind, but we brought Darcy.”
Nick’s hand slid to the small of her back, ushering her forward. “Darc, this is Gus Rankin. He owns the place.”
“Nice to meet you.” She smiled and stuck her hand out.
“Pleasure, ma’am.” A grin spread across his tanned face. “What can I get y’all?”
“Four beers?” Nick glanced to the group. Everyone nodded.
Long neck bottles were soon placed on the wooden bar.
“We have a new waitress, Pam,” Gus told them. “She’ll be around to see if y’all need refills or want to order food.”
“You have a cook tonight, Gus?” Chris asked with a grin.
“We have a cook most nights, boy.” He chuckled deep and rich. “Just hardly ever the same one.”
A fiery redhead bumped into Chris from behind.
The woman balanced a tray on one slender hip and rubbed a hand over Chris’s back. “Sorry, you okay, sweetie?”
Nick shook his head at his brother’s goofy grin.
Eyes wide the young stud nodded.
Gus removed the tray from her hands. “Pam, this is the Matthews clan. They own the dude ranch out on Hope Road.”
“You want anything, just give me a holler.” She winked at the runt.
“Let’s get a table.” Trent led the way through the room.
Nick ushered Darcy across the dance floor and headed to one of the round tables. Unwilling to put much space between them, he pulled out a seat for her and seized the one on her right. Chris straddled a chair on the far end. Trent grabbed the remaining one.
“Let’s do a toast to the last family who stayed in cabin three. Thank the good Lord they left. The kid was a brat,” Trent stated with a snarl.
While his brothers recapped stories of past guests, Nick noted the strained smile on Darcy’s face. She raised her beer and downed a good portion of the contents.
He nudged her leg. “You havin’ a good time?”
“Sure.” She drained the rest of her beer and motioned to Pam for another as the waitress drifted past the table.
Nick worried over her slamming down the barley. With her slight frame, the alcohol wouldn’t take long to affect her.
“So, you two together or what? Romantically, I mean?” Pam placed a bottle in front of her.
“Never a good idea to mix business and pleasure,” he answered automatically, raising his voice over the noise. A glance in Darcy’s direction had him taken back by the hurt that flashed across her face.

2014 New Year - New Resolutions

Hello,
For those of you who follow my blog you know it's been a while. That's an understatement.....I am horrible about keeping up with my blog, which brings me to my New Year's Resolution. I normally don't make one as I feel that if you want to improve yourself and/or your life you shouldn't have to wait until a new year. Now I'm going to eat those words, because here I am making a resolution at the beginning of the year; I am going to attempt to post twice a month - maybe more by the end of the year.
I have always worried about boring people to tears with meaningless information or writing things that aren't quite so entertaining as the next persons. However I have decided if my posts bore you, don't read them... But please come back in hopes I will someday catch your attention with one of my blogs. There has been lots happening around this homestead and I will tell you all about it in future posts. Of course, I can't give it all up now. :)
If you have a New Year's Resolution you'd like to share, please tell us about it. I'd love to hear other people's views on Resolutions.

Friday April 12,2013
was a very sad day for my family. Our 9 year old German Shepherd  passed away.
He will be greatly missed.

I'm sure many of you too have lost a pet and know what I mean when I say they are truly apart of the family. Some ask, "Why have an animal and go through the pain of losing them?" To you I say, I would rather have had the great pleasure of enjoying a pet than to not know the joy and love they give back to you unconditionally.

You have given us more than you will ever know.
R.I.P.

REVIEW FOR GREENHORN HEART

I woke up this morning to a wonderful review from Beth Hardy at Night Owl Romance. Here is a quick look at what she had to say...

This was a very romantic story about Jolene who has to raise her nine-month old sister after tragedy strikes and handsome but grief-stricken cowboy Seth. Their relationship begins building from the moment Jolene enters the house and it never stops blossoming.

2012

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Things have been a little crazy with the holidays, which I am sure is the case with most families. This year I am hoping to make a fresh start - new goals - personal and not. Hey, I already started cleaning out cupboards and making room for new junk :-)
This week things have slowed down a bit and its time to get back to the day to day routine of kids going to school, cooking, cleaning, laundry, work, and WRITING.
I am very excited about starting a new journey with two new characters - Jared Randall a mountain man trying to give life to his deceased sisters dream and Angelina Cox who is the Montana DEQ specialist who can put a stop to it all.
Stop back and see what is going on with these two. I will be sure to make random posts about their journey as they reveal it to me. ;)

Top 5 - Holding On

HOLDING ON made top 5 of the third quarter for new releases. YAY! Thank you to all who downloaded the book.
I can only hope my writing continues to grow.

GREENHORN HEART

At her dying mother’s bedside, Jolene Norris promised that she would keep her baby sister safe from her money hungry aunt and uncle. Unfortunately, keeping that promise is proving a lot more difficult than Jolene thought, and she needs help. Her aunt is out to prove Jolene is unfit or at the very least unstable to take care of her sister, forcing Jolene to seek Seth Morgan’s help. She needs his home, his land, and his name. Too bad he’s as welcoming as the bulls he raises. Scared that she’ll lose her sister, Jolene makes Seth a deal he can’t refuse.

Seth doesn't have time to take care of a petite woman who is as green as her eyes or the small drooling complication on her hip. He doesn't do babies or marriage, not after his ex-wife killed herself and their three-year-old son. But he desperately needs the money Jolene offers him.
Together they arrange a marriage of convenience, which quickly becomes so much more.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR DEBBY CONRAD

Hi Debby. Thank you for being with us today. Why don’t you tell us a little about the first book you sold.

The first book I sold was LUST’S BETRAYAL.
here is the back blurb –

Steamy adultery, romance, secrets and murder – that’s what the McLaughlin family is made of.

Ross McLaughlin hasn’t loved a woman since his wife died, and his teenage daughter Emma is enthralled with a wannabe rock star. When they receive a letter from a sick loved one, Ross reluctantly heads home. The naΓ―ve Emma can hardly wait to meet her family and find out about their past, yet Ross harbors an unspeakable secret: a member of the family might just be her mother’s killer. After this summer on the lake, the McLaughlins’ lives will never be the same.

Where were you when you got your first book contract? Who did you tell?
I was at work. I called my good friend and fellow writer Mary Campisi. She was the one who tipped me off about the publisher wanting new authors for their romance lines.

What draws you to write your genre and sub genre?

I love to read romantic comedy and romantic suspense so naturally I chose those genres to write. You can never have too much laughter in your life, and the suspense
elements keep me guessing.

Do you have any tips for new writers? Yes, I actually have a few. 1) Write a page a day, no matter what. A page a day equals a book a year. I don’t always do this, but when I am disciplined, it works. There are days that my planned 1 page per day turns into several pages per day. If you step away from your book longer than a day, it is extremely difficult to get back in the habit of writing daily. I have learned anything
can turn into a habit once you do it 21 days in a row. 2) Find a critique partner or critique group. Make those critique partners accountable to you and you to them. This will keep everyone writing and moving toward the finish line. The prize – A
completed novel!

What is your guilty pleasure?
I love to play mindless computer games. After a stressful day at my full time job, I enjoy coming home and playing games so I do not have to think about anything else.
Those computer games are also my worst enemies—they keep me from writing. They are time wasters, so try to limit your time on the computer to checking emails and playing games to 30 minutes per day, or only after you have written your page for the day.
Where can your readers reach you?
Email: DKAY@aol.com or my web site: www.debbyconrad.com
Are you working on another book?
Yes, I am working on a body switching story that is a Romantic Suspense. The working title is CHANCES ARE.
Do you have an excerpt you’d like to share?
Jenna Caldwell left the big city of Chicago in search of her birth mother. But along the way, a car accident changes her life forever. She is now living in the body of another woman, married to a man who despises her. And how can she blame him once she finds out she may have hired someone to murder him?
How did you come up with the title?
I was thinking “Chances Are” this will never happen and it just clicked.
Do you work on one project at a time or mulitples?
One. I am too scatterbrained to do multiple projects, but I admire those who can. J
Is there one particular thing that you find challenging about writing?
Yes. Believing in myself. Every author goes through periods of self doubt, and I am no different. I try to tell myself if I never publish another book I have had a good life and should not be greedy by wanting something I may not be able to have. Then, I kick myself and say, “But I really need this. My life would not be complete without writing and seeing my stories published.”
Who is your favorite author?
I don’t have just one. I love to read books written by different authors. I love Sandra
Brown’s romantic suspense novels and Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s romantic comedies. I love Leland Barclay’s witty humor and bad guy characters as well as Nelson DeMille’s ability to mix humor with his terrorist plots.
What are you reading now?
RETRIBUTION by Jilliane Hoffman.
Are your characters a reflection on you or anyone you know?
Not normally. But then again, I will never say never. J
Do you use more than one pen name?
I do not use a pen name.
What do you do to get in the mood to write?
Absolute quiet. I cannot stand background noises like TV. I sometimes like to take a hot bath, relax with my eyes closed and let my imagination run wild. And the third thing is I sometimes think about my characters and plot while I am on a road trip.
What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love losing myself in the writing and playing out the character roles. Real life is so exhausting sometimes. It is fun letting the imagination take control.
If you were a supernatural creature, what would you like to be and why?
Probably an angel. Angels are nice. I hate the thought of being something mean or scary.
How long have you been a writer?
Since 1996. It took me 10 years to publish my first novel.
How many books have you written? How many have been published?
I have completed 14 books and published 3.
Do you have a favorite character from one of you own books? Who and Why?
I would have to say Pepper Delaney from EVERYTHING BUT THE TRUTH.
She witnessed a mob murder then dressed as a hooker to slip out of town
unnoticed. She continues the charade as she has no idea who to trust. She’s a gutsy heroine.
What is the easiest and hardest thing about writing?
The easiest part is being able to escape reality and the hardest part is the discipline. Life always seems to get in the way of everything.
Do you find love scenes difficult to write? Absolutely. A writer tries to be unique with every scene, but there are only so many ways to write a love scene that does not cheat the reader out of the fine details. It is the most uncomfortable part of the writing, at least for me.
Are any of your personal experiences reflected in your writing?
There are always personal life experiences which help an author make her writing more authentic, but none of my characters are based on me personally.
How long does it usually take you to write a book?
I have written a book in as little as 6 weeks, when I wasn’t working, but my current work in progress has been ongoing for 7 years now. Normally, 4 months is my average.
Do you set timelines when you’re writing or write when the feeling hits you?
Normally when the feeling hits me or when I need to take something to critique group. Several years ago, when I was fortunate enough to stay home and write full time, I wrote every day.
Do you characters talk to you?
Sometimes they do. When I am really into my writing, I can feel my characters’ emotions and it is as if they are real people.
Who controls the storyline, you or your characters?
Mostly me, but on occasion I have surprised myself by moving in a different direction based on what I feel a particular character wanted to do.
What is your writing day like once you start a book? Because of my day job I do not have a writing day.
If I am lucky enough to have the weekend to write, I like it to be my project for 2 days
straight. I will write for an hour, get up and do something else, then come back and write another hour or so. In between, of course I waste time playing stupid computer games or checking emails, doing laundry and cooking.
Do you promo your backlists when you’re writing a new book, or dedicate your time solely to writing?
I am bad about self promotion, although I am putting 2 of my books, which are out of print, up on Amazon as a Kindle selection along with another book. They will be available in a few weeks.
How many books do you write in a year?
When I was on a roll I could write 2-4 per year, but I am slow as molasses right now.
Thank you again, Debby for answering all our questions. I personally look forward to reading more of your stories and cannot wait for your next book.

Review for Holding On.

Thank you Bec for the great review!
Holding On was a really captivating story from the beginning with the way
it introduced Brandi and her baby. The sex scenes were hot, and the love between Dex and Brandi was unmistakable through the writer's words.
Overall, Holding On was a great short story and the first I've read by this
author. However, it won't be my last. Well done, Ms. Thomas.

Overall rating:
Sensuality rating: Very sensual

Fall

Fall is fast approaching and we are almost done with our canning. I believe we have canned enough tomatoes, froze enough watermelon, cantaloupe, green peppers, and onions, to last until next season. However we still have peppers to do, and grape juice to make. (Maybe some applesauce. I love homemade applesauce.)
Our garden didn't do as well as we hoped as this was its first year (we moved in our new home about a year and a half ago). But we did get a lot of watermelon and cantaloupe and thanks to a few good friends (who has two green thumbs) we were able to stock our pantry. I'm sure ours will do much better next year.
Fall is by far my favorite season. I can't wait for the leave to start changing. So go put cinnamon potpourri in the slow burner, throw on a blanket, and grab a good book.
What is your favorite season? How did your garden do this season? Do you can your vegetables and fruit?
